FEBRUARY 2020 NEWSLETTER

Hello Everyone

We have had a very busy January.  We have hosted the Resolution Buster Bonspiel, Servus Credit Union U18 Bonspiel, Mechanical Contractors Bonspiel and Red Deer Oilman’s Bonspiel. We also hosted 156 people at the Costco Christmas party during the U18 spiel and Skate Canada was here during the Oilman’s spiel. The Ronald McDonald House Bonspiel was this past weekend with the Farmers 75th Annual Bonspiel starting on Monday, February 3rd at 2:30pm. It will have been a very busy 6 weeks to start 2020.

During the Oilman’s Bonspiel we had an 8 ender. The score was 3-2 playing the seventh end when Rick Dore, Al Redel, John Beekman and Brad Barteski scored the 8 ender! Congrats to the boys!

Playdown updates – Fred Armstrong and Steve Majetka have qualified along with a couple team mates from Lethbridge for the Provincial Seniors in Lacombe              February 12 – 16th.

Carol Robertson, Leanne Sather, Kathie Strome and Kerri Towers have qualified for the Women’s Master Provincials in Airdrie March 4-8th.

The Mickey Pendergast Team with Rob Armitage, Randy Ponich and Kevin Pendergast have qualified for Men’s Masters Provincials in Airdrie as well. They are the defending two time Canadian Champions looking for a three peat playing March 4th – 8th.

The Jordan Bauer Team along with Joel White, Carson Thurber and Jayden Bourke will be in Airdrie February 14-17th to play in the Alberta Winter Games after qualifying in Leduc earlier this year.

Our annual Jack n Jill Bonspiel that will be played March 20th – 22nd this year has a couple openings for Ladies Teams if anyone is interested. There is a short wait list on the Men’s side but please enter if you were wanting to curl in it as I typically get most of the waiting list into the bonspiel. We usually have 52-56 teams. Contact the front desk at the curling rink and or leave a message.

Our annual golf tournament goes Friday, June 12th, 2020 at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Sundre. Last year we had 108 golfers. It’s a 4-person scramble and we use handicaps. If you do not have a handicap then we will figure one out for you. More details to follow. You can sign up at the front desk at the curling centre.

From July 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2020 we will have hosted or are scheduled to host 189 non-curling events. We still have 5 months to go so we will likely exceed that number.

Sincerely

Wade Thurber

Christmas 2019

Hello everyone

Congratulations to Lori Watts. She won our 50/50 raffle that was drawn on December 16th. She won $507.50. We will start another raffle in January that will be drawn March 16th. Proceeds from these raffles will go towards small projects or repairs around the curling rink. Thank you for your support!

The 22nd Al Gerig Bonspiel was played this past Saturday. We had 18 teams. A family oriented bonspiel was enjoyed by all as we played Christmas on the ice, had a turkey dinner with all the fixings and played for some cash prizes. This year’s winners were Merle Craven, Beulah Johnston, Norm Haney and Donna Haney. This bonspiel is a bit of a fundraiser and the tradition being the winners get to pick the charity of their choice to give the money too. They choose the Canadian Mental Health Association as the lucky recipients of the $500 raised this year.

We have room for some curlers starting in January as some leagues re-group after Christmas. We have the beginner’s league with instruction starting on January 5th. It’s $100 per player and goes until the middle of March. Contact the office at 403-346-3777. Please leave your name and phone number if we miss your call as we enjoy our Christmas break. On Tuesdays we have morning and afternoon Sturling Leagues. There is room in either for a couple two person teams. Those leagues are $75.00 per player. Our Thursday Pioneer League also has rooms for teams. They go at 1:00pm. For either of those leagues you can contact Gerald Frizzley at 403-596-4702.

On January 4th we are hosting the first Resolution Buster Bonspiel presented by Spirit of Red Deer. It is $260 per team. Must be 18 years or older. Register at spiritofreddeer.com. Grand prize is free beer for a year!

We wish Good Luck to Team Hollie Vincent and Team Claire Booth as they participate in the Provincial Juniors starting January 1st in Lloydminster!!

In the month of December we are open 21 days and are hosting 22 non-curling events plus league Christmas celebrations. It will be a busy month for the kitchen. Our December calendar can be seen here. We are closed from December 22 until January 3rd for our Christmas break although the ice staff will be here doing a controlled melt and some flooding so we are good to go come January. Please think of us if you or someone you know is looking for a place to hold a meeting, trade show, wedding or other such type events.

On another note, we have a staff member that could use some Christmas charity. She has come a long way from pulling herself out of homelessness to now facing her second brain operation. We are her only family basically. She is pretty much on her own. She could use some help as she recovers from her operation. Our staff is already working on a financial donation and I thought maybe if our membership knew the story that some might be generous enough to help out with either food, gift cards or money. Any donations are much appreciated and can be dropped off at the front office. There is also a fundraiser for her at The Krossing on the evening of December 21st if anyone is interested. Thank you in advance for any donations. Much appreciated!

We will be selling 50/50 tickets starting this week. Proceeds will go towards small upgrades or projects around the rink. You will be able to purchase tickets at the front desk or at the bar.

We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year
